What We Do
Creative
Successful creative endeavors are rooted in good ideas. At Behrmann Thomsen we take great care to learn about who you are as a company, and what you are trying to do. From that base of knowledge, we generate a variety of ideas that are discussed and refined, to get your project off to a good start.
Meaningful visuals follow a well defined script. Some projects require the story to be diligently scripted before developing visuals, while more documentary style projects require a loose creative outline to guide us through the process. Whatever your project needs are, we work with you to make sure the messaging is telling the right story.
Whether it’s animation, or live action, every video needs a unique look that has been created with intention. Through illustration and reference material, we work with our clients to make sure we’re on the same page about the look and feel of your project.
Production
Productions can get complex, and often present a minefield of logistics that are best to overcome before the day of the shoot. Some of the logistical challenges that we solve on each shoot include, but are not limited to:
Experience goes a long way in being able to successfully address and solve the many logistics involved with the production process.
From pre-production, to the shoot, to post-production, either Doug Thomsen or Adam Behrmann will be charged with making sure that your project stays on target in terms of messaging, and the visual aesthetic that was established during the pre-production phase.
For each production, we renew a personal challenge to provide the best cinematic quality possible within the project’s budgets constraints. This means taking a fresh look at lighting, lensing, and camera options for each production. Armed with the best tools at our disposal, we take great care to craft each shot, from framing, to rigging the camera, to lighting, hair and makeup, and even the nitty gritty details of the best codec and frame rate. We stress over the details so you don’t have to.
Post
While each project is unique, we’ve established a process of check-ins and milestones that work for most edits. This includes:
Narrative assembly
Check-in to make sure the messaging and content structure are working.
Rough Cut
Check-in after layering in B-roll and music to establish tone and pace.
Fine Cut
Check-in featuring a refined pass with music, B-roll, titles and graphics, audio mix, and color correction.
Final Cut
Check-in featuring a version that is intended to be the final cut.
Final Tweaks
Final tweaks if needed.
Videos revisions are presented with password protected Vimeo files for easy sharing, and final deliverables can be delivered in any specifications the client needs.
Animation and motion graphics can add a layer of dynamism and professionalism to a piece. Or, they can be the entire piece, allowing a brand to communicate big ideas that would be cost-prohibitive if filmed in live action. For these types of projects, we use a thorough storyboarding phase to make sure we are envisioning the same video before beginning the complex process of bringing animation to life.
Tools common to this work are Adobe Illustrator, After Effects, Character Animator, and Blackmagic Fusion.
Our color process has evolved to make sure that your project is crisp and stunning. In order to do this, we film in extremely dense codecs (often RAW to allow the maximum bit depth). We also use calibrated monitors and scopes for color correction, ensuring that your project will look good across all screens, not just the screens we’re using to edit and review.
Projects
For the Handyman Connection project we were assigned to shoot 20 stills, and 9 videos over the course of two days. Careful planning was required since we needed to design a work-flow that would be efficient enough to capture the stills, B-roll, and interview shots needed in such a short time. To maximize efficiency we lit everything with continuous lighting, allowing us to quickly change between still photography and video.
Each of the past 3 years, Okta has given us the opportunity to create awesome video content for their Sales Kickoff Event. This year's theme was "Boundless" so we decided to see how high they could fly in 1,000 frames per second slo-motion.
The Microsoft Surface Studio is a powerful device for artists. It's size, color rendition, responsiveness, resolution, and ground-breaking Dial interface empower creators and companies like Madefire to take their creativity to the next level. We created a total of 20 mixed media assets for their joint campaign, including videos, photos, social media GIFs, and an in-store video display.
We worked with VitalTalk to create this Impact-ICU Toolkit. Creating a total of 10 videos that are used as core assets to help nurses to be more effective communicators and to improve nurse-physician collaboration. These videos include a combination of model conversations and expert interviews.
We've been working with the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation every year since 2013, creating awareness videos, advocacy videos, fundraising videos and more to support their mission of providing care and a cure for those living with Myotonic Dystrophy. Doing this has involved working with the MDF to craft the key messages to be conveyed in each video, and also traveling to the homes of people living with DM, to help them tell the story of what it's like to live with DM and the kinds of challenges they face.
Over a period of 5 years, we worked with the Cypress String Quartet to document some of their incredible work in the Bay Area and beyond. From world-class musicianship, to inspiring kids at local schools, the Cypress was a cultural force.
We created promotional pieces, a "day-in-the-life" short doc, as well as a 30-minute documentary film about their 20 years together.

About Us
Behrmann Thomsen is a full service San Francisco Bay Area video production company. We do everything from creative concept development, script writing and art direction, to production planning, direction, cinematography and sound, to post-production editing, animation, color, and sound mix included.
The company’s founders, Doug Thomsen and Adam Behrmann play the role of Director and Producer, and therefore will always be the creative leads that see any Behrmann Thomsen project from start to finish.
The partnership creates a combined skill set that facilitates an experienced end-to-end service in video production. Before they joined forces, Doug Thomsen spent years working at some of the leading advertising agencies in San Francisco. Adam Behrmann got his degree in Media Arts at the California College of the Arts, and went on immediately to work in video production with various production companies and agencies in the Bay Area. Combining their skill sets and experience, they formed a video production company that functions like an agency, since Behrmann Thomsen takes great pride in being able to take a project from ideation to the creation of a polished final product.
Behrmann Thomsen's studio is in Emeryville, just across the bridge from San Francisco. Every day, we collaborate in-person in real time, to produce the best results and experience for our clients.
We frequently hire for photography, motion graphics, video editing, and graphic design.
